The Colors of Autumn

Most of the time I prefer subdued tones, moody scenes, but on occasion I delve into the scenes that demand color. I had posted an earlier shot of this same scene, but this is after the sun had set and the colors of the day sprang to life. Typically I only spend a small amount of time on my edits, but this scene really drug me in and allowed me to let my creative juices flow. Something to inspire a bit of awe, persuade you to visit my mountain home, let you see why we call it the Blue Ridge Mountains.

As I stated in my short summary of this sunset photo above, I like moody scenes, drama abound. This scene however required something more, and while I did hit my saturation just a touch in the scene, I kept it looking fairly natural believe it or not. I added a bit of detail and sharpening to capture it, but at the end of the day this is essentially the scene my eyes beheld. I could of darkened it down, but in this case the colors speak for themselves in this lovely setting. You, in your own photo edits should consider what the scene needs during your edits, certainly allow your style to ring true, but take into account the nature of it all.

Photo edits don’t have to be difficult, but shouldn’t be ill conceived smattering of effects at your disposal. Take your time, look at what your camera captured, consider what the shot was in memory. Even take a shot with your cellphone perhaps. Your edits should be inherently your own, but keep in mind that those same images need to at least convey the reality of the scene in some sense. A bit askew occasionally, I personally enjoy desaturating, and dropping my clarity a bit to create mood, but it’s still true to the scene, this is just my take on a bit more reality than normal.
