The Deep Wild

Another trip up into the high peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains, out along the parkway, I stopped in the bend of a road to observe the rapidly changing light. The clouds weighed heavily in the sky, a storm coming from the west, and the temperatures dropping rapidly forced the clouds down from the sky, landing squarely on the peaks. Light was diffused, soft streaks of light painting over the tops of trees, and the clouds rolled through. Through the misty views the spine of the mountains was revealed, giving you a glimpse into the deep wilds beyond.

When making plans for a trip you have to take the weather into account. On this day I spent some time observing the weather, watching the rain moving off from the area, and the incoming storm. Caught between two fronts I had until sunset before the next storm would roll in. Knowing how local weather reacts during this time of year, I spent a bit of time finding several locations to shoot form as the clouds would likely be dropping as evening rolled in. This is just one of those locations, but the first of many.

As for the edit, I altered the color temperature of the scene, warming it up just a touch, I worked on individual sections of the photo, such as the sky, and foreground. It was overall a simple task, capturing the darkening clouds, and the mountains in good light, but because of the heavy mist, the contrasting light didn’t spring out as much as I would have preferred. The only way to fix this, dodge and burn, adding contrast and visual excitement back to a otherwise flat lighting scenario.

Until Next Time!
