Dry Falls

The roar of the falls, the wind in your hair, and the spray as the water strikes the rocks bellow, yes indeed, we’ve been here before. The deafening beauty of the crashing falls splayed out before you in an endless orchestra. Close your eyes and let your world melt away, carried off downstream as the water serenades you with the sounds of nature, and, if you listen closely, perhaps even more. The cavern behind this fall allow you to hear as it resonates off the solid granite and lime stone deposits, yes indeed, we’ve been here before, at the mouth of Dry Falls.

I of course spent quite a bit of time wandering dry falls this day, this is the big shot here. The full fall from the mouth to the rocks just bellow. The so called “money” shot. Indeed, it is a great image, a wonderful scene to splay out before your friends and colleagues. It’s odd to me that I live so close to such a natural wonder, and yet havn’t visited this local in almost nine years. I simple hike down a paved trail and there it is. Simple, and wonderful.

The edit for dry falls came down to several things. Did I want to add texture back to the fall, or leave them silky and let the scene around it create the contrasting texture. I opted, of course to leave it silky as you can see, which meant using a slightly longer shutter speed to create the seemingly ethereal flecks. Then masking over that base to give us a more translucent appearance to the rushing water. Finally we added some shadows, brightened up some of those cavernous areas, and dropped highlights where the sun shown to brightly. All in all, this was a fun project to work on.
