Southern Comfort

My time out in the Outer Banks was interesting. The sheer amount of people, houses, vacationers. My first day out was difficult, I spent the time working on finding my compositions, working on working in an environment I am entirely unfamiliar with. I spent time walking around with my cellphone snapping photos, working the composition back and forth, until I finally went and got my camera and got to work. I had wandered the circumference of this house until I found this final shot. Simple, familiar, but still a challenge in its own right. In the final edit I decided to move in the direction of HDR to counter balance the mostly blue sky, give depth to a amazing environment.

The take away for me in this image is simplicity. Working with any environment is going to be tricky if you’re not familiar with it. So, look for something you recognize, use basic tricks like shooting with a cellphone, or wandering with your camera. You will find a composition almost anywhere, in almost any situation… Just take you time, and your composition will look amazing.

I hadn’t personally been to the coast since I was a kid, and to my memory I don’t think I had ever been on the Outer Banks before. I was excited, and already want to head back to get those compositions I feel I missed, or could do better. I want to spend more time with the wildlife lens, maybe get the lighthouses in the evening light, and wait for them to switch on to get the lovely light beans spreading out over the environment. All of those ideas for my compositions stem from wandering around with my cellphone snapping shots to find my bigger composition.

Until next time!
