Storms Rolling In

Storms on the Great Lakes rolling in unexpectedly, quickly, and the sight is unreal. Clouds crawling across the sky like a apparition, clawing at the pristine blues as if to tear them asunder. Those blues fading away as the misty fingers race across the sky on a north wind, soon the sun is pouring through those clouds backlight and burning orange, sprinkles of rain falling from overhead, wind kicking droplets off the lake itself as the people hurry to put those rain jackets on. Surely soon a storm would be rolling in. It wouldn’t be long after the sky would break, and the world bellow would be drenched in unrelenting waves of rain.

During a recent trip to Erie PA I managed to find a moment to stop on Presque Isle and capture a few shots. I was only up there just long enough to pick someone up and head home. Fortunately, there was enough of a break in the action that I managed to sneak off to do just the barest amount of sight seeing. I checked my phone for potential scenic areas, and ran up to the peninsula. I would of liked to of stayed longer and let the lightning float through the sky, but alas, I had no such time, and off I went back south to my misty mountains.

The edit here is devious at best, I pulled out a few tricks I am not often interested in. Firstly, the sky here is a replacement, and while it’s true we had such a sunrise that morning, this was taken at noon, I had to relight the scene to create the visual interest I needed, rather than the sheer wall of sickly blue that lay behind this lighthouse. Further, I lit up the lighthouse, the North Pier lighthouse on Presque has a red light, not a white, of course I did consider trying to replicate that, but in the end, I opted for this particular effect. A bit of color manipulation, some vignetting, and upping the contrast and sharpness on the tower itself and we called it good.
