Another Life

Within the woods, amongst the brush and the chaos erupting all around you, it can be difficult, but not impossible. Stop, breath in the air, look around, and pay just a little attention, and let your compositions reveal themselves to you. The smallest scenes can be as grand as the largest landscapes, finding an old long fallen tree can offer you just the right mix of interest, texture and visual interest, not to mention that natural magic. This fallen tree gave me all of that, and more, the knot acting as an eye within the forest, the green man looking back out into the world.

Woodland photography is a different sort of animal than what I’m used to. Forcing me to slow down more than I’m used to, taking time to set the composition, and then adjusting on the fly based on the ever changing natural light. This tree has been featured in some of my photos before, but always from afar, this time i wanted to get a little closer, and really push the limits of my new camera. What can It do, and what are the limitations, so far, I am quite pleased with the overall results.

As far as the edit here, it was a simple affair. Light, shadow, color temperature, a slight vignette and a radial filter to bring shadows up around the knot. The hard part of this particular photo was the color balancing act, not pushing any color too far, while also ensuring you get the right areas highlighted. It just takes a little time!
